Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)

The Notice of Intended Marriage is the form that tells the celebrant you intend to get married.

Most couples call it the NOIM.

Book first, then do the NOIM

Our normal process is:

  1. book at paperwork.net.au/book
  2. pay the fee
  3. prepare the NOIM
  4. have it witnessed
  5. send it to us

Once we receive the paperwork, we can work on confirming a date, time and place.

The easiest way to prepare it

NOIM Easy walks you through the form step by step and creates a ready-to-print PDF.

It can also email a copy directly to your celebrant if you want.

When it needs to be given

Usually, the NOIM must be given to the celebrant at least one month before the marriage date and no more than 18 months before it.

The notice period starts when the completed NOIM is received by the celebrant.

Information you will need

The form asks for things like:

  • your full legal names
  • date and place of birth
  • current addresses
  • previous marriage details if relevant
  • parent details

Supporting documents

You will usually need:

  • proof of date and place of birth
  • photo ID
  • name change documents if needed
  • divorce or death documents if a previous marriage has ended

Who can witness the NOIM?

The NOIM must be witnessed by an authorised person.

That can include a celebrant, JP, lawyer, police officer, doctor, or another person allowed under the law.

If you are overseas, a notary public or an Australian diplomatic or consular officer may be able to witness it.

If you are not sure, ask us before you sign it.

Can it be witnessed remotely?

Yes. Since 12 June 2024, the law allows the NOIM to be witnessed remotely by audio-visual link as well as in person.

If you want to do that, check with us first so it is done properly.

Common things that cause delays

  • using the wrong legal name
  • missing divorce documents
  • unclear copies
  • untranslated documents
  • signing before the right witness
