Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

ID Needed to Get Married

When you get married, we need enough documents to confirm who you are and that you are free to marry.

Most couples need

  • proof of date and place of birth
  • photo ID
  • evidence of any name change
  • proof that any previous marriage has ended

The usual document combinations

Most people provide either:

  • a current passport, or
  • a birth certificate plus photo ID such as a driver licence

If your name is different to your birth certificate

You may also need:

  • a change of name certificate
  • a previous marriage certificate
  • another official document that links the names properly

If you have been married before

You will also need:

  • a divorce order, or
  • the death certificate of your late spouse

If your documents are not in English

You will usually need official translations as well.

See Interpreters and Translators.

Helpful tip

The easiest way to avoid delays is to book first, then send clear copies and ask questions early if anything looks unusual.

If you are working through the notice, NOIM Easy can help you spot what information is needed.
